Offshore projects are lost at the interfaces — between the well scope and the structures scope, between engineering and the yard, between the installation contractor's assumptions and the operator's expectations. Those gaps are rarely visible in the contract and always visible in the schedule.

Methodology

    Set the execution basis

    Agree the contracting strategy, work breakdown and the measurement rules for progress before mobilisation — ambiguity in progress measurement is the single most common source of schedule dispute.

    Build the interface register

    Identify every interface across disciplines and contracts at the start, with a named owner and a required-by date on each. This is cheap to do early and extremely expensive to do late.

    Assure the engineering

    Independent technical review of contractor deliverables against the design basis, with findings tracked to closure rather than filed as comments.

    Be present at the yard

    Client site representation during fabrication, testing and load-out. Weight growth, dimensional deviation and quality issues are found on the shop floor, not in progress reports.

    Control cost and schedule honestly

    Verified physical progress, earned value against a resourced baseline, and a forecast at completion that reflects reality even when it is unwelcome.

    Close out properly

    As-built documentation, dossier handover, lessons learned, and — for decommissioning — site verification survey and regulatory close-out reporting.

How do you manage a Tier-1 FEED or EPCI contractor?

Through clear technical assurance, a live interface register, verified progress measurement and early challenge of assumptions. Most contractor performance problems are visible in the engineering deliverables months before they appear in the schedule.
