The Challenge
Fabrication problems are cheap to fix in the yard and expensive to fix offshore. Weight growth, dimensional deviation, welding non-conformance and late material substitution all have the same characteristic: they are visible on the shop floor weeks before they surface in a progress report.
Working across two major yards in different countries added the practical problem of maintaining a single consistent standard of acceptance when the workforce, supply chain and local practice differed at each.
Our Approach
Weight growth and dimensional deviation are found on the shop floor. They are never found in a progress report.
VORYX team members acted as Client Site Representative, embedded at the yards rather than reviewing from an office. Inspection and Test Plan hold points were attended and enforced, not waived under schedule pressure.
Weight and dimensional control was tracked continuously against the lift and load-out design basis, because a lift analysis is only valid against the weight and CoG the structure actually has — not the one in the original weight report.
Load-out readiness was managed as a defined gate: punch list status, sea-fastening and grillage readiness, structural completion and documentation all verified before the operation was allowed to proceed.
What We Delivered
- Client site representation at McDermott Batam and Jebel Ali
- ITP hold-point attendance, witness and surveillance
- Welding, NDT and coating quality surveillance
- Weight and dimensional control against the lift design basis
- Non-conformance management and concession review
- Punch-list management and load-out readiness gate assurance
- HSE compliance oversight and schedule progress verification
The Outcome
- Consistent acceptance standard maintained across two international yards
- Weight and dimensional deviations caught before they invalidated lift design
- Load-out executed against a verified readiness gate
- Operator confidence in fabrication quality at handover
Standards Applied
- ISO 19902
- AWS D1.1 / ISO 5817
- ISO 9001
- ISO 45001
- DNV-ST-N001
